THE STRIP: Affordable Housing for Historic West Side

Historic West Side, Las Vegas

Spring 2019

Critics: Eric Strain, FAIA

“The Strip” is located in the Historic West Side of Las Vegas and spans across over 5 acres of land. The housing is lifted off the ground to allow more space for the park, but to also take the housing away from the sound of the highway just to the west and 360 degree views of the city. Precedence for the facade of the units are from the Visual Arts Building at the University of Iowa, creating a protected screen during the day and illuminated its surrounding at night to make the complex more inviting and secure. In elevation, the housing units start to emulate sheet music to represent the jazz music performed at the Moulin Rouge, four levels of housing equating to four lines of music. The newly redesigned park has mainly free amenities for everyone to enjoy and so one can use the park how they please. The site contains basketball courts, community gardens, playgrounds, free space for events and art showcasing, and much more. The construction of the highway fractured the community and all that was left was this “strip” of land. What better way to serve the people who reside here than to give them “The Strip” they were never welcomed to enjoy.
