GYRATE
Spring 2019, UNLV
Critics: Alberto de Salvatierra
“Gyrate” is high-rise tower that sits on a metaphorical archipelago surrounded by an endless body of water. The island consists of over 60 buildings and landmarks and is the perfect getaway for anyone. The site is located in a non-arid climate and has many tropical trees and fauna existing on the terrain. Gyrate takes on the form of a double helix that reaches towards the sky. The tower acts as both a permanent and temporary solution for all users on the island. Guests can stay at the hotel held within the framework for a luxury experience, but the main function of Gyrate is a light rail station that connects all the peninsulas. The island consists of seven light rail stations with hotels integrated in so guests stay on whichever island they please. It’s twisting motion creates spaces for balconies on every level and allows every room to have a 360 degree view. Gyrate is supports by 5 major columns that pierce through the central axis of the building, as well as the outside perimeters. This allows floors to cantilever over terrain and ocean to make one feel like there is nothing underneath of them.
